Anne McLaughlinSNP momentum continues as Labour woes deepen

The SNP tonight delivered a major blow to Labour, slashing their majority in the labour heartland seat of Inverclyde by over 50 percent in only three weeks.

Labour's majority fell from over 14,000 to 5838

The result saw a swing to the SNP from Labour of 9 percent, an increase on the 6.9 percent swing achieved only eight weeks ago in the Holyrood elections.

'Put Inverclyde at front of movement taking Scotland forward'

On the eve of the Inverclyde by-election, SNP Leader and First Minister Alex Salmond has urged voters to back SNP candidate Anne McLaughlin's plan for jobs and "give Labour their notice" after the party was exposed over secret redundancy plans.

Ms McLaughlin and Mr Salmond hit the streets on the final day of campaigning to meet shoppers in Kempock Street in Gourock.

Mr Salmond said: "Anne has shown she will fight for the people of Inverclyde and fight for their jobs. She has already exposed the Labour candidate and his Tory coalition partner's secret plan to cut council jobs.

On his fifth visit to the Inverclyde by-election SNP Leader and Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond tonight joins candidate Anne McLaughlin for a public "Ask Alex" meeting hosted by Elaine C Smith.

With 24 hours of campaigning to go there is all to play for in Inverclyde as more voters turn to the SNP to make Inverclyde better.
