The SNP Government have a record of delivery to be proud of and this is highlighted with the passing of the Damages (Asbestos Related Conditions) Scotland Act. 2009. An issue that affects Inverclyde in so many ways.
This legislation was not part of the SNP manifesto in 2007 and was taken into the Scottish Parliament by local SNP MSP, Stuart McMillan who worked with Award Winning Charity, Clydeside Action on Asbestos.
Stuart McMillan MSP said: "The SNP Government recognised the arguments and agreed that justice should be delivered to those people who suffer from asbestos related conditions such as pleural plaques and pleural thickening. When the original bill was taken to the Scottish Parliament, it was considered to be fairly effective, however the SNP Government strengthened it with amendments to include even more conditions.
"The SNP realised that the House of Lords decision in October 2007 to overturn the right of people to claim for justice, a right for 20 years, was wrong. It was a shameful decision by the Lords but thankfully justice is devolved to Scotland so we in Scotland could act to overturn this.
"What has happened in the House of Commons? What has the Labour Government done to overturn the decision? Nothing. Labour have been a disgrace to their so called ‘party of the working man’ claims. Gordon Brown continually failed to act to overturn the Lords decision, even though he had the power to do it. Labour could have brought forward legislation, as happened in Scotland, but didn’t. They sat on their hands and failed every man and woman who suffers from pleural plaques and other asbestos related conditions." |
